Suder’s Art Store
Suder’s Art Store, a family-owned business, celebrates its centennial in 2024. The store has been located on Vine Street in Cincinnati’s Over-The-Rhine since 1924, and at its current location at 1309 Vine Street since 1931.
Suder’s is known for carrying a wide range of professional artists materials including hard-to-find pigments, papers, and paints as well as offering top quality framing services, restoration, and other services. Suder’s is also known for having its own private parking lot in the heart of Over-The-Rhine.
Suder’s Art Store began in 1924 when John Suder, Sr., purchased a frame shop, Bittelmeyer's, at 1331 Vine St. in Cincinnati and changed the name to Suder’s. Primarily a frame shop and gallery at first, art materials were eventually added to accommodate the local artists who came to the store to sell their paintings.
In 1931 the store moved a few doors down the street to 1309 Vine St. where it remains to this day. The art materials have grown and crowded out the artwork, but the framing services remain. Suder’s also has an online presence, shipping hard-to-find art materials such as pigments and fine papers.
Over the years, Suder's has been a constant in OTR, enduring economic slumps, urban development, civil unrest, and a pandemic. The store is an informal gathering place and important resource for the Cincinnati art community. Sharon Suder (third generation) and long-time employees Ros Boles, Charles Frymier, and Crews McCulloch provide expert advice on framing, art materials, restoration, and more.
At one point (1989-2004), Suder’s operated a satellite location in the Art Academy of Cincinnati when the school was adjacent to the Cincinnati Art Museum, introducing art students to quality art materials and gaining loyal customers. The most recent location of the Art Academy is just two blocks from Suder’s so students still have access and visit the store on a regular basis.
Suder's wishes to thank the artists and art lovers of Cincinnati, past and present, for without them the journey is not possible.
